Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is a beautiful country with a unique culture. It is considered dangerous, not because of the rumored cannibalistic practices in some areas, but due to the conflicts among its 800 tribes, which are often fought with bush knives (machetes) and sticks. I had the privilege of visiting this remarkable place during the pandemic when Team Rubicon sent a medical team to support hospitals in dire need of doctors and nurses.

Ramadan in Times Square
As I walked into Times Square in NYC, I was greeted by smiles, hugs, friendship, and love. People addressed me as “habibi,” a term of endearment that literally means “my love” and is frequently used. I was invited to cover a beautiful Muslim tradition marking the start of Ramadan, the first Taraweeh, which took place on March 10, 2024, Taraweeh is an optional night prayer during Ramadan, performed after the Isha prayer. It involves recitations from the Quran and is typically done in congregation at mosques. It’s an opportunity for Muslims to engage in additional worship during the holy month.

A Solar Eclipse from NYC
The anticipation was palpable as everyone gazed at the sky, awaiting the solar eclipse. Just moments before, the crowd buzzed with speculation—would it resemble nightfall? Would the glasses work? As people gathered in the square in front of the Flatiron Building, a jubilant atmosphere took over. By the end, some were in awe, while others wondered if they had missed something. Nonetheless, the event united New Yorkers, drawing them together to witness a rare celestial phenomenon and fostering a sense of community and shared wonder.
Whitesburgh, KY Floods
While I have been covering disasters for a while, I had never seen the amount of distruction created by these floods. The first flash flood brought 4 feet in height, but not long after a second flash flood become so high that people were trapped in their homes without being able to open doors to escape.
